Botox/Dysport
Botulinum Toxin is a purified botulinum neurotoxin type A complex, produced from a culture of the A strain of bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum Type A.
Botulinum Toxin works by preventing the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from the nerve endings at the neuromuscular junction which inhibits the contraction of the muscle for a duration of time (3 – 4 months). This reduction in muscle contraction means that the overlying skin can relax giving it a wrinkle free look.
Botulinum Toxin has been used safely for over 15 years in the treatment of muscle disorders of the eyes and voice box, headaches, spasticity of the stomach, spasticity associated with cerebral palsy, and other neuromuscular disorders, in addition to its cosmetic indications.
DERMAL FILLERS
Injectable filler is a soft gel like substance that is injected into the skin at different depths to help fill in facial wrinkles, provide facial volume, and augment facial features.
Most dermal fillers are composed out of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a type of temporary dermal filler. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body and has the ability to attract a lot of water which leads to our skins being hydrated and plump.
As we age, we start to see a decline in fat volume, muscle density, skin elasticity and bony structure changes in the body. In the face it presents as sagging, fine lines, wrinkles, folds, thinning of the lips and hollowing underneath the eyes and temples.
With the aid of these fillers we can add volume, create structure, and reduce the appearance of lines and sagging, restoring the 3-dimentional contours of the face.
Areas that can be treated include:
- nasolabial folds
- hollowness underneath the eyes (“tear-trough deformity”)
- wrinkles (around the mouth, cheeks.)
- marionette lines
- thin lips
DERMAPEN/HYDRAPEN
Dermapen is an advanced skin needling technique and makes use of multiple ultra thin needles that vertically and precisely pierce the skin, activating the skin’s natural healing process.
These “micro wounds” stimulates collagen production and as the skin responds, it plumps and thickens, reducing the appearance of scars, wrinkles and fine lines.
Conditions that can be treated include:
- Mild to moderate acne scarring (acne scars, keloids)
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Skin with big pores and bad texture
- Pigmentation
A serum or peel can be added to a dermapen treatment as there is superior absorption. This increased absorption of active ingredients into the skin is because of the fine channels created within the skin by the needle tips.
Theses channels carry up to 80% more topical nutrients deep into the skin’s fibroblasts to feed the underlying cells found in the dermis and basal layers of the skin creating stimulated repair and faster resurfacing results
HYDRAPEN
A Hydrapen operates by using small, fine needles to create tiny micro-channels in the skin, allowing serums or other active ingredients to penetrate deeply. This process not only enhances serum absorption but also stimulates collagen production and promotes skin rejuvenation through the body’s natural healing response. Essentially, it merges microneedling with mesotherapy to deliver treatments directly to the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in improved skin texture, reduced wrinkles, and more effective absorption of topical products compared to traditional methods.
Key aspects of how a Hydrapen functions:
Microneedling action:
The device uses a cartridge with tiny needles that quickly puncture the skin, creating microscopic channels.
Serum infusion:
As the needles create these channels, a selected serum or mixture is simultaneously infused into the skin, allowing for much deeper penetration than with topical application alone.
Collagen stimulation:
The micro-injuries caused by the needles stimulate the body’s natural healing process, boosting collagen and elastin production.
Improved absorption:
By creating these channels, the Hydrapen significantly enhances the absorption of active ingredients in the serum, making them more effective.
What a Hydrapen can treat:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Hyperpigmentation
- Enlarged pores
- Skin texture improvement
- Stretch marks
CHEMICAL PEELS
The skin naturally renews itself every 28 days, but this process slows down over time. To refresh your skin without resorting to surgery, many people choose chemical peels. These cosmetic treatments involve applying specific chemicals to the skin to encourage or speed up exfoliation, effectively promoting the skin’s natural rejuvenation. Want to learn how a chemical peel can benefit your skin?
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a non-surgical, non-invasive dermatological procedure that uses certain acids to accelerate or promote the skin’s natural cell turnover process. This treatment helps improve various skin imperfections and blemishes. While chemical peels can be performed on different parts of the body, facial peels are the most common.
What are chemical peels used for?
Chemical peels can target several skin concerns, including:
- Reducing fine lines around the eyes and mouth
- Improving wrinkles caused by aging, sun exposure, and genetics
- Treating acne-prone skin
- Minimizing age spots, freckles, and hormonal pigmentation (like those from pregnancy or birth control)
- Enhancing skin texture, reducing small scars, stretch marks, and enlarged pores
Types of chemical peels
Chemical peels are categorized based on the depth of skin penetration:
- Very Superficial: These peels lightly exfoliate the outermost layer of skin to improve tone and radiance.
- Superficial: They work on the epidermis, targeting the skin’s surface without penetrating deeper layers. They help renew the epidermis and provide a smoother look.
- Medium: These peels reach the entire epidermis, causing noticeable peeling. They promote skin renewal, collagen production, and elastin formation.
- Deep: These peels go into the deeper layers of the skin, reorganizing structural components like collagen and elastin. They’re often used for treating deep acne scars and sun damage.
Factors affecting exfoliation depth
Several elements influence how deep the peel penetrates:
- Concentration and pH: The intensity and effectiveness of the peel depend on the chemical substance and its pH level.
- Type of chemical used: Common acids include alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), beta-hydroxy acids (BHA), alpha-keto acids, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
- Skin type and condition: Factors such as skin thickness, history, and sebaceous activity can affect the peel’s depth.
- Formulation: Peels in aqueous, alcoholic, or hydro-alcoholic forms act quickly, while gel-based solutions penetrate more gradually, depending on how long they’re left on the skin.
- Skin preparation: Preparing the skin with recommended products before the treatment helps minimize potential side effects.
- Application technique: The depth of application, exposure time, and method (brush, gauze, or stick) all impact the effectiveness of the peel.
The chemical peel process
A typical professional peel follows these steps:
- Skin preparation: Cleanse the skin to remove makeup, oils, and impurities, especially around the eyes and lips. For body treatments, oil is removed directly.
- Protecting sensitive areas: Delicate areas such as the eyes, nostrils, and mucous membranes are shielded.
- Applying the peel: The chemical solution is applied quickly and evenly. You may feel some tingling during this step.
- Regeneration: A soothing mask is applied to calm and repair the skin, helping to unclog pores.
- Finishing and protection: A calming cream is applied, followed by a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+).
